Dylan went home to work and after a shower in the apartment above the Little Knitting Box, Myles handed the keys to Cleo and went to meet Sandy at Marlo’s café on Main Street. She was already there, relaxed and chatting away to the waitress serving her coffee. She stood when Myles pushed open the door and enveloped him in a hug.

‘You look flushed,’ she said, ‘did you race here?’

His hair was still damp and his face hot from the water. ‘I went running with Dylan. But don’t worry, I’m clean now so ready to get going with the place-setting plans.’ At least it would take his mind off work for a bit. He’d already ignored a phone call once and set his cell phone on silent so they wouldn’t be disturbed.

‘How are Dylan and the lovely Cleo?’ Sandy asked.

‘Busy as ever,’ he grinned, and they lost themselves in conversation about the kids, the pregnancy and Myles’s mum’s love of knitting.

‘The first thing she’ll do when she’s next here is go to the Little Knitting Box,’ he told Sandy. ‘It’s almost like her second home. Or third, if you count my apartment.’

‘You sound as though you like having her around.’

‘Actually, I really do.’ More than he’d thought, he was looking forward to them coming back to New York. He’d missed out on a lot with her over the years but his family life had shaped him into the person he was now: hardworking, cautious, and a man who knew what he wanted.

‘Right, first things first,’ said Sandy. ‘Remind me of the exact headcount for the wedding.’

‘Fifty in total.’

‘Nice round number.’

‘Would’ve been fifty-three but there are a few from the UK who can’t make it, what with family commitments.’

She opened out a rolled-up piece of paper and flattened it on the table as Myles ordered a latte and another cappuccino for her. ‘So we have the top table seating eight, and then another six tables each seating up to eight guests. This diagram shows round tables but do you know if that’s definitely what the venue has in mind?’

He shrugged. ‘Do you want me to check with them?’

‘No, it won’t make much difference to who we put with whom. Hopefully they’ll be round though, it’s much more sociable. And more relaxed, I think, which is the atmosphere you’re both going for, am I right?’

‘That’s the idea.’ He wished they could carry forward that atmosphere to their day-to-day lives right now.

‘The top table will be rectangular, I remember the lady at the Moonlight Loft & Terrace telling me that part,’ Sandy continued.

‘Who sits on the top table?’ Myles had no idea. Thinking back to Winston’s wedding, he was definitely sitting there as the best man, but he’d either blocked from his memory who else was sat there with them or else decided it wasn’t really important.

‘You and Darcy, obviously,’ Sandy smiled, ‘then both sets of parents, the chief bridesmaid plus the best man.’ Using a pencil she wrote in the names. ‘Now,
